Most commercial mold and mildew cleaners contain sodium hypochlorite (bleach), sodium hydroxide (lye), ethanol and formaldehyde. But sodium hypochlorite and sodium hydroxide are corrosive. They can burn the eyes, throat, skin and lungs. Formaldehyde is higly toxic and considered a carcinogen. Ethanol can damage mucous membranes.
Try this herbal solution for mold & mildew prevention:
2 Cups of hot water
5 Sprigs of fresh thyme or 10 drops of thyme essential oil
11/4 Cup of vinegar
1/4 Cup of borax
Bring the water to a boil, pour over the thyme sprigs in a bowl and allow to steep for 30 minutes before straining off the liquid into a spray bottle. Then add the borax and vinegar and shake well. Spray generously on surfaces and wipe with a clean damp cloth. NOTE: If mold or mildew has already set in add 2 teaspoons of tea tree essential oil and or 8 to 10 drops of citrus seed extract. Spray the surface areas and allow to sit for a few hours before wiping with a soft cloth. Respray the areas and then let dry without rinsing. One often used synthetic ingredient in household cleaners is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. It is used for its foam building abilities, but it can cause eye irritation, skin rashes, hair loss, scalp surf (similar to dandruff) and allergic reactions.
